Tell Us About Talamanca!

A much loved and must see part of Costa Rica is the Talamanca region. Talamanca is one of the most bio-diverse regions in all of Costa Rica, displaying a large number of native plant species and wildlife that lures nature lovers from all over the world for a visit. Some spectacular sights that can be found here include crocodiles, coral reef, mangrove swamps and sea turtles. In addition to this area’s natural appeal the Talamanca region is also home to indigenous communities founded by the original inhabitants of the country. The indigenous people of Talamanca are largely self-sufficient, depending on farming for their livelihood. However, it is also one of the most impoverished regions of the country, and many of its inhabitants struggle from a lack of access to potable water and electricity.

This region’s strong emphasis on conservation is one of the many reasons Outward Bound Costa Rica began bringing its students to Talamanca three years ago. OBCR’s involvement in this area is mainly service-based and provides students the opportunity to work with both endangered sea turtle populations and with the native people of the region. Sea turtle conservation work primarily takes place in Gandoca, located within the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge, near the Panamanian border. On this pristine beach, students perform night patrols to help new hatchlings make it to the ocean, maintain trails within the reserve and collect eggs for keeping in protected areas. Students enjoy the picturesque setting while contributing to a worthwhile cause.

OBCR also brings students to the highlands of Talamanca, located some 4-hours from the coastal part of this amazing region. Students lend a hand in rural mountain communities and have the chance to connect with a part of Costa Rica that few visitors experience. Projects include teaching English to children, beautification of village buildings and conservation projects. Through interactions with the local community, students gain valuable insight into rural living and come to appreciate simpler lifestyles of others found in different parts of the world.
