¡Bienvenidos a Kate! OBCR Welcomes New Staff

The Communications staff here is excited to welcome our new Custom Course Manager to the OBCR team! Kate Burke will be dedicated to running and developing OBCR’s Custom courses, also known as our Build an Adventure program. She hopes to collaborate with others to create high-impact, meaningful learning opportunities in beautiful Costa Rica. Here on base, you can find her trying to win the love of our local perros. When she’s not in the Outward Bound office, however, Kate hopes to explore the country’s hiking opportunities and get involved with surf culture! Learn more about Kate below.

Kate Burke
Hometown: Overland Park, KS
Education: B.A. Journalism & Communication, University of Oregon

Kate’s love for the natural world was born on Oregon’s Pacific coast beaches, Colorado’s high mountains and the pristine prairies of Kansas. She studied at the University of Oregon in Eugene, where she dove into environmental journalism and biological anthropology. An Alternative Break trip to Perú in 2011 inspired her to spend a summer studying abroad in Spain and lead a second Alternative Break trip to Jamaica. These trips, in addition to a 30-day outdoor educator expedition in the Alaskan wilderness, have cultivated a passion for experiential learning and the alternative classroom.
