The Role of the Front End Developer

We are currently looking for a passionate and self-motivated technically-focused team member to develop and maintain our website in the following capacities: responsive styling; cross browser, device, & platform functionality; php [wordpress] templating. The ideal candidate will be a mix of a detail-oriented programmer and a motivated creative project initiator as they will be responsible for two types of roles.

The first phase, lasting the first four to six months, is to work alongside a back-end developer to interpret illustrator-based layouts within branding guidelines into a working responsive site with log-in capabilities.

The second role will use a lot more creativity as the candidate works with other office members to design and develop engaging online media to increase course participation. This role will be more prevalent after the first four to six months and will last the duration of the contract.

Our Organization

Founded in 1997, Outward Bound Costa Rica offers a range of experiential education programs promising challenging physical activities across Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama with a focus on personal development, leadership, and cultural immersion. Students comprise high school and college-age young people from diverse international backgrounds. Other key demographics include adults, educators, social/business groups and families. Courses are 8-85 days.

The Communications Office is a collaborative team of five responsible for all communications, sales, marketing and customer service tasks organization-wide. Staffers are charged with increasing course participation across all target audiences and ensuring excellent customer service with regard to stakeholder communication – from prospective students, to families of students currently on course, to alumni and partners.

The organization has approximately 10 full time base staff – half of which work in the Communications Office. This small group lives and works in close quarters. It is imperative that all Communications staff be able to thrive within these unusual working/living conditions. Additionally, the organization employs a number of full and part-time staff from throughout Latin America. Cultural sensitivity is highly valued and essential to the organization.

Work Experience Required

  • Required knowledge of: web development markup languages HTML/XML; stylesheet languages CSS/XSL and preprocessors SASS and Javascript, the DOM, its objects and their properties, PHP and database programming
  • Minimum three year experience interpreting graphic and interaction designs using HTML, CSS, Javascript, and PHP – responsive design a plus
  • Google Analytics experience and SEO monitoring a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to brand guidelines when developing web applications
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a team environment, including with back-end developers and non-technological coworkers
  • Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop

Contract Length

  • Preferred start date is late August. Contract length is 15-18 months, with a possible extension as agreed after 12 months
  • Relocation to Tres Ríos is required
  • The Front End Developer reports directly to the Communications Director

Compensation Package
