Student Adventures Update: August 23, 2013

Summertime here at Outward Bound Costa Rica is officially wrapping up. This is the last  Summer Adventures update this season! We’ve had an amazing summer with our Summer Adventures students and Girl Scout destinations program. The have surfed, hiked, rafted, rappelled, explored and served all over Costa Rica and Panama and we’re already anticipating next year!

Rainforest Exploration Challenge

Our Rainforest Exploration Challenge students had an action-packed week. Between four different host families, the students were able to practice their Spanish and recover from the long hike there. From learning to crank stalks of sugarcane through the traditional “Trapiche” to making traditional cheese and bread, the students were well fed during their stay in Piedras Blancas. They get their dose of adventure during the 70′ waterfall rappel. Before leaving they had the opportunity to visit Ranchos Tinamu, an eco-lodge with a program dedicated to protecting and reintroducing the red-eyed tree frog (the most photographed frog in the world!). After saying “adios” to their host families the students headed to Manuel Antonio where they spent a day on the water boogie boarding, then hiked through the national park the next day where they saw plenty of plants and animals including iguanas, sloths and an eyelash viper. They returned to the rainforest base to get some sleep before waking up early yesterday to raft the Sarapiqui river, but their adventures didn’t stop at the class II and III rapids. Today the group soared over the jungle on a series of zip lines during their canopy tour before venturing into San Jose where they got a taste of city life and visited the famous Artisan Market. The group will be packing up their bags tonight and head on their way homes as we wrap up the summer session here at Outward Bound Costa Rica. It’s been a great season and we can’t wait to have more groups like this one next year. For photos from their adventures, check our Facebook album!
