Girls Scout Destinations Update – July 2nd

Catching Waves #1

Catching Waves #1

The Catching Waves Session #1 Girl Scouts successfully completed their ten-day course this past weekend! We are happy to report that every one of the girls was able to stand up on their boards and only continued to improve in their last two days in Guanacaste.

Catching Waves #1

The Girls Scouts got a lot from the ten-day course. Elizabeth W. from Erie, CO described her experience as, “the adventure I’d been waiting for.”

The girls became more comfortable and empowered. “Before the course I was terrified of heights and nervous about [meeting] new people but now I feel so fearless and free to speak,” said Milan H. from Monee, IL.

Scuba and Sea Turtle Adventure #1

Scuba & Sea Turtle Adventure

After learning about sea turtle ecology, the Girl Scouts transitioned to the aquatic phase of the course in Bocas del Toro. The girls teamed up to help out the local community with a service project on the island of Solarte. Before diving into the warm Caribbean, the Girl Scouts first tested out the water and their balance with boogie and wake boards.

The girls finally dove into the waters with their scuba gear on Sunday for their first scuba lesson taught by our Executive Director, Jim Rowe. Everyday, the girls are putting their news skills and knowledge to practice in order to achieve their ultimate goal of receiving their Scuba Diver Certification.

Costa Rica & Panama Service Challenge #1

Service Challenge #1

Throughout their five days in Talamanca, the girls continued helping refurnish desks and build new sidewalks for the schools. They’ve gained cultural awareness through new customs, history of the location, food, and engagement with the children in the community. On their last day, the girls organized a scavenger hunt for the children and it was a bittersweet goodbye for everyone.

Service Challenge #1

On Monday they headed over to San San Pond Sak in Panama to spend three days learning and helping with sea turtle conservation. The girls are enjoying themselves and are maintaining a great sense of humor even with challenges that arise like having to fend off hungry mosquitos. Today they are going rafting. The girls have one message to send out to their parents: Have the laundry machines ready.
