Outdoor Leader Semester Student Update: February 9th

OLS1

Our Outdoor Leader Semester students have been in Costa Rica for more than a week, completing Wilderness First Responder training on our rainforest base.

During their rigorous training, the group learned skills such as First Aid and CPR, practiced rescue scenarios in the wilderness, and studied for a technical exam.

OLS3

“I learned almost as much about myself as I did about wilderness medicine and care,” said Luna T. of Alameda, California on the training.

All nine students passed the Wilderness First Responder exam.

OLS2

“It was definitely intense,” said Nick M. of Alberta, Canada. “There was a lot expected of us but we were all able to succeed.”

Elizabeth D. of Wilder, Vermont said the instructors played a key role in the students’ success.

“They taught in a different teaching style from what I was used to and it was easy to learn from,” she said. “I’m also learning more about how to be away from home.”

OLS4

The students are on course for 65 days earning certifications that cultivate their leadership skills and give them unique insight into the field of outdoor education. Next, the students will spend time on the rivers of Costa Rica for Whitewater Rescue Technician training.
