OBCR Holiday Gift Guide for the Outdoor Lover

OBCR Holiday Gift Guide for the Outdoor Lover

Instead of electronics, put on your wishlist items that will help you get outside, clear your mind, and get a leg up on your New Years Resolutions. These are items that we have tested in the field and highly recommend for hiking and camping:

1. Keen Voyageur Hiking Boots

For long distance hiking we recommend midweight hiking boots that are non-leather with a high cut for ankle protection. These are great for comfort, breathability, and the dry fast.

2. Under Armour HeatGear Short Sleeve Top

This short sleeve top is a must if you’re trying to keep your backpack light. It’s moisture wicking, breathable in hot weather, and dries fast for quick washings at night. It also protects your shoulders from the sun.

3. CloudLine Merino Wool Hiking Socks

Hiking is a full body workout and you need the right socks with your boots to avoid blisters or overheating. These wool socks will be your best friend.

4. Field Notes Personal Journal

Don’t go a day without a writing down your hiking adventures. This notebook is light and can fit in your pocket so there is no excuse not to bring it with you!

5. LED Headlamp Flashlight with Red Light

If you’re off-the-grid camping, the most useful tool will be a headlamp. Going hands-free is a must while cooking, setting up camp, starting a fire, or navigating through your belongings late at night.

6. Lightweight Portable Hammock

Although it is not a necessity, it sure makes relaxation time that much more enjoyable–especially with a book.

7. Chaco Zcloud Sport Sandals

We’ve tried many different sandal brands and these are by far the best for comfort and durability. Wear them sloshing around in a nearby river or just walking around your campsite.

8. Nalgene Water Bottle (32 oz)

For distance hikes we recommend having two of these or one Nalgene bottle and a bladder hydration pack. Dehydration is one of the most common hiking ailments, so stay hydrated and avoid it!

9. Joy Walker Waterproof Backpack Rain Cover

Nothing is worse than arrive to camp with all of your clothing and belongings drenched from the rain. This is why we line the inside of our backpacks with a trash bag and use a rain cover for dual protection against the elements.

10. Outward Bound Costa Rica course!

Now that you know some of our recommended gear, take a look at experiencing a course with us! Join us on a gap year/semester abroad, 1-8 week summer expedition, or a custom group course to create your own experience.
