Planting Trees, Hiking, and Conservation: Girl Scout Updates!

Planting Trees, Hiking, and Conservation: Girl Scout Updates!

This past Saturday we received 3 new groups of Girl Scouts: Service Challenge #3, Rainforest River & Reef #2, and Scuba & Sea Turtle Adventure #3. Since their arrival on Saturday, the groups have all spread out to various parts of Costa Rica and Panama to begin service projects and excursions. Here is where they are now:

Service Challenge #3:

After arriving to our rainforest base, the girls got a chance to relax and bond with their new group members and enjoy traditional meals before their first day of service. On Sunday the girls woke up bright and early to head out to the nearby reserve. There, they helped plant trees and learn about the importance of keeping the reserve clean and safe. Monday morning the girls began their travel day to Talamanca, Costa Rica. They were joined by Brynna Rao, Marketing Manager at OBCR, who will video the service projects and the girls. They have been painting the soccer locker rooms for the local school. Tuesday the girls head to the school to learn more about Talamanca and the BriBri language. They sat down to enjoy a language lesson with one of the teachers from the school and practiced with their fellow group members. Today and tomorrow they remain in the Talamanca region to continue learning more about their host family, the environment and to play and chat with school children.

Rainforest, River, & Reef #2:

After a long day of travel for many in this group they worked alongside the Service Challenge girls, on a group service project in the nearby reserve. There, they planted trees together and got to chat about where they were from as well as their past Girl Scout experiences. Later in the day they enjoyed a final meal with their fellow scouts before packing and preparing for transfer to Naranjo the following morning. Naranjo is where they began their hike within the beautiful Costa Rican rain and cloud forests. Today the girls are hiking to their first homestay with their host, Magda Zamora Lopez. We hear they are having fun and preparing themselves to learn more about Costa Rican culture!

Scuba & Sea Turtle Adventure #3:

Unlike the other two Girl Scout groups that joined us this past Saturday, SSTA girls were welcomed to our rainforest base and after meeting their fellow scout members,  immediately began to prep and pack for the next day. Sunday morning, before the sun had risen, the girls were already on a micro headed to San San Pond Sak, Panama. After the day long travel, they settled in and began to get excited for the days ahead. Monday the girls worked with sea turtle conservationists, catalogued the new hatchlings and learned about the importance of keeping baby sea turtles safe as they released them to the sea. Late afternoon on Tuesday, the girls enjoyed their last day in San San before beginning their trip to Isla Solarte and scuba lessons. Today they are out and about touring the beautiful province of Bocas Del Toro.
