Our 2016 Spring Leadership Semester students, who are on course for 65 days earning 7 internationally recognized certifications, have just returned from Bocas del Toro in Panama. For the scuba diving phase of this course, they explored the archipelago and enjoyed its warm waters while they completed their NAUI scuba certification.
“Scuba diving was really cool. It was great to see a shallow water reef as well as doing a deep dive to about 99 feet. We got to juggle egg yokes at a depth and it was the most strangely entertaining things I’ve done in my life. Also, we got to explore a cave full of bats,” said Nox C. from Fort Collins, Colorado.
“I saw a lot of cool things. I saw a moray eel, some squid, some lion-fish, and the bio-luminescence during the night dive was also very cool,” said Henry J. from Yermoth, Maine.
Besides scuba diving, students had the chance to explore the country and stay with local homestay families where they tasted typical Costa Rican meals. For many of the students, cultural immersion was one of the highlights of the course.
“A cool thing that we did in Panama was a service project where we helped clean out a fresh water reserve. We ate a lot of Jonny Cakes which is locally made coconut bread – it’s really good! We also got to wakeboard and learned a lot about lifeguarding,” added A.C. H. from Wilmington, North Carolina.
“My favorite part about the hike was the beautiful views and the wonderful food made for us at the homestays. We had all kinds of different vegetables, we made our own banana bread and we made some cheese. Also we prepared our own chicken. The whole thing was very eye opening,” said Connor H. from Concord, New Hampshire.
“My favorite part of the hike was the waterfall at Rancho Tinamu, the beautiful views and the wonderful families we stayed with. We got to swim at the waterfall and it was awesome,” added Jaxon B. from Eagon, Minnesota.
Today, students are doing canopy in the San Jose area and will move on to the rafting phase of the course tomorrow. They will be working hard to earn their Whitewater Raft Guide certification on the Pejibaye and Pacuare rivers.
