Our 2016 Spring Leadership Semester students, who are on course for 65 days earning 7 internationally recognized certifications, have just arrived from a surfing phase where they have been catching warm-water breaks in Playa Uvita and Playa Dominical. They also got the chance to go to the Manuel Antonio National Park and take a peak at the extraordinary beauty of Costa Rica’s fauna and flore.
“My favorite thing was to be able to see so many different beaches – I came on a Summer Expedition before but we didn’t have the time to explore as many beach breaks that we do now,” added Connor H. from Concord, New Hampshire
Students got the chance to get some expertise from their local instructors, who found that this Outdoor Leadership Semester group learned surfing particularly fast and supported each other in the process.
“I loved the surfing phase because surfing is such a big part of my life – it was so nice to see other people learn surfing and be able to give them pointers as they did. It was really great to see them enjoy something that I really care about, » added A.C. H. from Wilmington, North Carolina.
Students also got the chance to enjoy some related activities at the beach and have some down time for themselves:
“We’ve been surfing at Uvita, Dominical and Manuel Antonio. My favorite thing was surfing, but also getting some time to read in my hammock,” said Nox C. from Fort Collins, Colorado.
“What I preferred was the activity we call the Beach Olympics. We divided our group in two teams that competed in a Spanish words competition and then on how many waves we could catch in a limited time. The other team won, but it was really fun!” said Jaxon B. from Eagon, Minnesota.
The students have now headed to Bocas del Toro in Panama to scuba dive. This archipelago of Caribbean islands is famous for its warm waters which are perfect to explore under the sea. During this phase of the Outdoor Leader Semester, they will be able to earn their scuba certification from NAUI Worldwide.
We wish all our students the best of luck during the challenging and rewarding Outdoor Leader Semester. Be sure to visit our blog for more student updates and our Facebook page for photos during their course experience.
