Our Outdoor Leader Semester students just finished completing their Whitewater Rescue Technician training on the Pacuare River. Learning and practicing techniques such as swiftwater resue, self-rescue and reading whitewater while exploring thrilling rapids was a highlight for many of the students.
“It was really fun to swim some rapids and learning to rescue,” said Connor H., from Concord, New Hampshire. “We learned to rescue each other, and the river was so beautiful.”
During this phase of the course, students also learned raft-guiding skills, and encountered wildlife around the river.
“It was a lot of fun to learn raft-guiding down the Pacuare river and take control on these high-class rapids!”, said A.C. H., from Wilmington, North Carolina.
Students have now moved on to learning the fundamentals of technical rope rescue, first at our rainforest base to learn basics such as knots and anchor systems, and now outdoor to practice technical skills including personal safety and patient packaging.
“My favorite thing was trust exercises during the rope rescue training,” said Jaxon B., from Eagan, Minnesota. “It was pretty intense but still really fun.”
The whole group of students is working hard to earn their outdoor certifications and be a cohesive team. “It is amazing to see the growth and changes that happen in just a few days,” said Donna White, one of their instructors. “These students are committed to working really hard while still having fun together.”
The students are on course for 65 days earning certifications that cultivate both their leadership and technical skills.
We wish all our students the best of luck during the challenging and rewarding Outdoor Leader Semester. Be sure to visit our blog for more student updates and our Facebook page for photos during their course experience.
