One of the things we love most about Outward Bound Costa Rica is the nature we are immersed in everyday. Whether surfing at the beach, rafting in the river, or hiking in the rainforest, our students are always surrounded by the incredible outdoors. But what happens when students return home? For most people, spending this much time in nature everyday simply isn’t realistic. That’s why we’ve come up with five ways you can still get your outdoor fix everyday, even between school, work, and daily life commitments.
-
Break Out the Bike
Bikes are wonderful, so why not use yours? Biking to school or work and feeling the wind on your face is the perfect way to feel like you are spending some time in the outdoors (and save money on gas, too!). If you live too far from school or work, that’s fine. Even a short ride around your neighborhood or to get some groceries will leave you feeling accomplished, and knowing you’ve done something great for the environment. Need more motivation? Try joining a biking club to meet others with the same biking aspirations as you!
-
Gardening
Your only requirement here is to be motivated to keep some plants alive. If you’re looking to get your hands dirty (literally) without leaving home, than this option is for you. Plants are one of the biggest aspects of nature, which is why gardening is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the outdoors, right from your backyard! You can even bring them inside to make your apartment or house look nicer and enjoy the numerous health benefits of having plants indoors.
-
Take a Walk, Just to Walk
Plenty of people go on morning runs to get some exercise, but how much are you actually enjoying nature when your mind is concentrated on how many miles you’ve gone? We encourage you to slow it down, take a walk, and actually enjoy the scenery that surrounds you. Taking the time to notice trees and flowers that surround you will make you feel less like you’re just caught up in a busy day.
-
Eat Outside
Rather than eating your meals in your kitchen or sitting at your desk, why not take the food outside? This could be especially helpful during your lunch hour, when all you need is a break from sitting behind a desk, staring at a computer screen. On the weekends when you have more time, grab some friends, head to a park and have an old-fashioned picnic.
5. Hangout with Children or Pets
One of your biggest motivators to get outside will always be other people! Especially those who just want to play outside all day. Take the kids to the park, walk your dog, or just run around with them in the backyard. It all counts as “getting outside” and will leave you feeling refreshed and re-energized.
