Food is the lifeblood of many cultures, and Costa Rica is no exception. Sarah Beaman, a Girl Scout from California, recently joined us and was deeply impacted by Costa Rican culture through its cuisine – so much so that she returned home and held a Costa Rican-themed dinner party for her Girl Scout troop.
Sarah shared the following with us about her OBCR experience:
“I spent two weeks in Costa Rica for the Girl Scout Scuba, Sea Turtle and Service Adventure. I made lots of new friends while there. We got to try tons of new things and get pushed out of our comfort zones.
One of my best-loved things was being able to try food from Costa Rican culture. My favorite dish was arroz con pollo, rice with chicken. I got so excited when I came home to tell my mom about it that she gave me the idea to share it with my Girl Scout troop. We then ordered the special ingredients that day and I got to planning my Costa Rican-themed dinner party. I wanted to share this special meal with my troop because it was a special time in Costa Rica for me. When we ate meals, we were always sitting together having fun, laughing, and talking with each other.
I also had my mom buy me an empanada maker so that I could make them like Chef Samuel does at base. I loved the empanadas so much that I wanted to come home and recreate them.
Being away from home without my phone for two weeks was really an amazing experience. If I could go back in time and repeat it with the same people and have as much fun as I did, I would go back.”
In case you missed it...
