Caribbean Scuba & Service #2 Update-August 8th

The group completed their scuba diving training with Executive Director Jim Rowe last week on the island of Solarte and prepared for their four day sea-kayak expedition! During the expedition, students paddled in single and double kayaks through the archipelago and calm mangroves of Bocas Del Toro. The waters were very tranquil through the mangroves because the pieces of land become absorbent of the waves by soaking up the surrounding sediments. Students were led by instructors Donna and Niko kayaking a few hours during the day and later setting up camp at night. While kayaking, students also received lessons about problems with overfishing, local shark populations, and dolphins! Although the weather was unpredictable at times, students still enjoyed braving through the adverse conditions of their adventure-thrilled exploration through Panama. They students also had the opportunity to go to San SanPond Sak to learn about sea turtle conservation with local rangers. At San SanPond Sak they discover the intricate habitats of sea turtles, along with information about different turtle species and their life cycles. Today they loaded up their boat and headed off the island of Solarte making their way back across the Panama border to Costa Rica. Tonight they will have their final group dinner at our rainforest base and send-off meeting as students say their goodbyes to their newly made amigos!
