After hours on buses, a border crossing and some more buses, we finally arrived in the colonial city of Granada. The next morning we took ourselves on a self-guided walking tour of the city with the help our handy Lonely Planet guide book. After snapping some great pics of the city we were off to the famed Masaya Market to do some shopping.
Micro-buses and rickshaws helped us make our way from Granada to Big Foot Hostel in Leon the next day. After exploring Leon and grabbing some dinner we decided to call it an early night as we knew the next day was guaranteed to be epic. Breakfast at the hostel and then into the truck for the drive to Cerro Negro Volcano.
Having erupted over 20 times, Cerro Negro is the world’s most active Cynder Cone Volcano and is also the site of an activity called volcano boarding. The hike to the top was interspersed with breaks for photo ops, including a group shot where the crater was previously located and where sulfur oxide still flowed freely. Once we reached the top it was time to suit up and slide down. No one in our group managed to break the 86km/hour record, but fun was definitely had by all.
After checking one of CNN’s “Thrill Seeker’s Bucket List” items off our list, there wasn’t much left to do but head back home.
