It seems like just yesterday our 2015 Fall Outdoor Leader Semester joined us for the start of their 65-day in Costa Rica. We can’t believe they are already more than half way through their course!
All five members of the group passed their training and earned certifications in Technical Rope Rescue, Whitewater Rescue Technician and Wilderness First Responder.
In their Wilderness First Responder training, the group learned how to make critical medical decisions in remote conditions.
“I think so far the Wilderness First Responder has been the most useful because the knowledge and information I gained from that course I can apply to my everyday life the most,” said Kirby N. from Arlington, Virginia.
In Technical Rope Rescue the group learned how to perform rescues using ropes.
“I liked the technical rope rescue because it is something I’ll use again in the future and Phil is an awesome teacher,” added Megan G. from West Tisbury, Massachussets.
Raft guiding while earning their Whitewater Rescue Technician certification has been a highlight for the group.
The raft guiding was really hard but also really fun,” added Kirby N. “It’s an adrenaline rush- the whole boat’s in your hands -it’s fun to be in charge!”
“I like guiding because its that 100 % in the moment feeling that you can only get with certain things,” said Evan P. from Charleston, South Carolina. “I also liked technical ropes because of all the physical activity.”
“I realized I could be a raft guide in the future,” said A.J. G. from Alexandria, Virginia. “I was scared of white water before and now I’m comfortable. I feel more comfortable than I expected in white water, and I really like the river towns in Costa Rica. They are laid back.”
Next the students will head to Playa Avellanas for surfing and then Boca del Toros, Panama to earn their scuba certification.
“I’m exciting for scuba diving because I would love to see a future doing something like that,” Ben W. from Fairfax, Virginia said. “I’m really excited to get my expert scuba diving certification.”
“I’m looking forward to finishing strong, having fun and memorable moments,” added Evan P.
We wish all our students the best of luck during the rigorous and rewarding Outdoor Leader Semester. Be sure to visit our blog for more student updates and our Facebook page for photos during their course experience.
