Coast to Coast Semester
Our Coast to Coast students have officially started their Costa Rica hiking phase: they will be hiking from the Caribbean Coast to the Pacific Coast over 26 days! After surfing, rafting and service projects in Nicaragua, the group is ready to embark on the cross-country hiking expedition that will be the cornerstone of their Semester.
Coast to Coast participants will have the chance to see some of the most remote regions of Costa Rica by hiking this route used only by Outward Bound Costa Rica. The group will learn to make their own shelter, camp under the stars and backcountry cook.
Ella celebrated her birthday with her group while hiking. Happy Birthday Ella!
Outdoor Leader Semester
Outdoor Leader Semester participants have officially started their rafting phase! They will earn their Whitewater Rescue Technician certification, issued by Rescue 3 International, and learn how to become efficient guides on the river.
“The students are doing great with guide training,” said Bailey, OLS OBCR instructor. “All of the students swam through a rapid on the river. We are on the river training all day and, despite the really cold water, everyone is in good spirits and having fun.”
When asked to describe their experience with culture shock by our Communications Director, our students were quick to invent interesting categories for their answers, ranging from “Never Leaving the Country” to “Happy to Have Left Home and Hilarious”. Seven of the participants are already committed to becoming outstanding professionals in the outdoor industry and the whole group is ready to work hard to perfect their leadership skills.
The majority of OLS students also described themselves as confident, excited and happy, though a little nervous about passing some of the certification exams.
We’re sure the entire group will do an excellent job!
