Week of July 13: Girl Scout Destinations and Summer Courses 14-18 Course Update

This week, we had two Girl Scout groups begin their journey while two 14-18 Summer Courses wrapped up their adventure! See what everyone’s been up to. 👇🏼

Girl Scout Destinations

Service Challenge (Session #3)

Our SC group kicked off their time in Costa Rica volunteering close to “home” here at our base camp! They headed into the dense rainforest reserve behind base to do trail maintenance and reforestation projects. On Monday, they hopped into the van and enjoyed a beautiful drive through the country to Katsi in Talamanca. After settling in with their host family, they’ve been giving back to the local community by painting the outside of a Kindergarten classroom and working on the school’s “huerta”; a small garden/farm area. This weekend the group will say “adios” to their family in Katsi and move on to sea turtle conservation in Panama!

Scuba and Sea Turtle Adventure (Session #3)

The SSTA group has been on an adventure indeed! Here’s a taste of what they’ve been doing:

  • Spotting sloths and swimming at Sloth Island
  • Practicing rainbow colors in English and playing with school children
  • Trying sugar cane
  • Doing team building activities like the human knot
  • Planting pineapple and plantains
  • Watching manatees
  • Repainting the meeting room in San San Pond Sak
  • Digging up eggs from a hawksbill sea turtle nest
  • Releasing baby sea turtles, going on night patrols, and exhuming nests
  • … and more!

They’ve definitely been busy bees! Soon they’ll be on to the Caribbean archipelago of Bocas del Toro in Panama to start the scuba portion of their trip.

Summer Courses 14-18

Surf, Service & CPR (Session #2)

Our SSCPR dudes completed their First Aid & CPR/AED certifications and wrapped up their time surfing earlier this week! 👏🏽 They got back to base on Wednesday and were immediately making all of our staff members laugh — they’re a funny group! On Thursday they went whitewater rafting on the Pejibaye River, facing class III and IV rapid and having an absolute blast doing it. Today, the group is zipping through the canopy on a zipline tour. Later today they’ll be heading into the lush rainforest reserve behind our base camp to volunteer on trail maintenance and rainforest reforestation projects.

Caribbean Scuba & Service (Session #2)

The CSS students finished their scuba and sea kayaking adventures earlier this week and moved on to becoming wakeboarding pros! They also got a chance to spot sloths super close up on Sloth Island. On Tuesday, the group headed to San San Pond Sak and met with leaders from the community to learn about the conservation efforts for endangered Leatherback and Hawksbill sea turtle populations. They got to catalog nests, release newly hatched baby turtles, and complete nightly patrols to monitor the mama sea turtles laying their eggs along the beach before making their way back to base on Thursday. We’re happy to have them back and have loved hearing their stories!

It's not too late to join us on a Summer Course!
