Yesterday our Spring 2015 Outdoor Leader Semester students arrived at base to start their 65-day adventure in Costa Rica and Panama. Nine students are joining us from California, Colorado, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Vermont, Washington and Canada.

“I have always been very physical, and I love the outdoors… so Outward Bound [Costa Rica] was a natural fit,” said Iia C. of Mount Vernon, Washington.

“I can’t explain how excited I am to begin my journey to Costa Rica for the spring semester,” added Nick M. of Alberta, Canada. “I haven’t had the opportunity to experience Central America, so I am looking forward to new surroundings.”

The students will spend the 65 days exploring many regions of Costa Rica and Panama while participating in challenging activities such as hiking, whitewater rafting and scuba diving to push their limits.

“I chose this course because I knew it was going to be a challenge not only physically, but also mentally,” said Sandra F. of Needham, Massachusetts.

“The main reason I decided to apply for this course is because I wish to learn and grow outside of the normal school environment, and, while doing this, put myself out of my comfort zone as much as possible,” added Daniel H. of Wake Forest, North Carolina.

While on course, the students will receive an in-depth introduction to the outdoor industry and train in seven internationally-recognized outdoor certifications in Costa Rica and Panama.

“With my passions for the outdoors, I would also like to use this trip as a stepping stone in my career, and add more credibility to my skills,” said Devin B. of Ames, Idaho.

“My main reason for joining Outward Bound this semester is to explore the possibility of working in the outdoors,” echoed Elizabeth D. of Wilder, Vermont.

“The skills I obtain on this trip will be invaluable,” added Luna T. of Alameda, California. “As an aspiring zoologist, I have hopes of traveling abroad for my work, and I think that my wilderness certifications will make me much more prepared for the work I may encounter.”

This will be the second Outward Bound Costa Rica course for Rachel A. of Louisville, Colorado who previously participated in a two-week summer program. “I am eager to participate in an even longer course in a country that has a special place in my heart and to learn even more about myself, my capabilities, and get an introduction to the outdoor industry.”

Veronica R. of Arieta, California is also looking forward to discovering more about Costa Rica during her course experience. “A large part of my motivation comes from wanting to immerse myself in a different community and culture,” she said. “I want to be able to practice Spanish… try new foods, and meet locals of the country.”
