Solo travel was previously thought of as intimidating and risky. It was for the daring travellers who were looking to push the boundaries, break the glass ceiling and get out of their comfort. You had to be a great map-reader, bilingual, and have lots of dollars in the bank.

Flash forward 20 years, and you have a German traveller using ‘blablacar’ (long distance carpooling service) conversing with an Argentinean passenger in English whilst checking he’s going in the right direction on google maps. This ease of travel and communication has evolved as technology and English have become more dominant aspects of peoples lives.

Further backed by the rise of budget airlines, this feat doesn’t seem so daunting anymore. So what does this mean for the solo traveller?

Language

Easy for backpackers whose native tongue is English. Tv, media, music.

People can converse in English, have google translate, bilingual schools.

Everyone Else is Doing it

As statistics are showing, it’s ok to solo travel. There is a growing trend with some companies seeing a 40 percent growth and solo travel up 15% from last year.

Hostels have always been around but with the rise of review websites such as hostel world and booking.com rating everything from the atmosphere to the security to location. Backpackers can filter there travels in terms of their preferences. You don’t just rock up to a country and take a shot in the dark these days.

All-Inclusive Holidays are Old hat

Although we love our parents and a free week in the sun sounds appealing, the millennial traveller is becoming tiresome of a week in a beautiful country when all you see is the pool and the all you can eat buffet.
