5 Costa Rican Recipes That You Can Make at Home

Many OBCR students who come on course with us have the opportunity to learn traditional recipes at homestays with Costa Rican families. We have picked out some of our favorites for you to try at home!

1. Tortillas

There is nothing quite like a homemade corn tortilla, either on the side of some tasty Gallo Pinto (see below!) or by itself with a generous serving of sour cream.

Making homemade tortillas can be a fun activity for friends and family and it requires just five simple ingredients.

2. Gallo Pinto

Introducing Gallo Pinto, the Costa Rican breakfast of champions. You can’t go wrong with this rice and beans dish, especially with a side of fried or scrambled eggs!

Ingredients for Gallo Pinto include rice, beans, onions, red peppers, and cilantro. It is a great way to use up leftover rice and keep you full for the whole morning.

3. Chifrijo

A particular favorite amongst OBCR staff, chifrijo is a popular dish served in bars throughout Costa Rica. It is a bowl of rice and beans topped with fried pork meat (or cheese for vegetarians!) and topped with avocado, pico de gallo (a light, chunky, non-spicy salsa) and lime.

Once you have layered up your ingredients in a bowl, dig in with some tortilla chips and enjoy!

4. Empanadas

Empanadas can be found everywhere you look in Costa Rica, including roadside stalls, bus stations, and cafés. It is a cheap and filling snack that is surprisingly easy to make at home!

These parcels, made of corn dough, are filled with your meat of choice or can be made vegetarian-friendly by using beans or cheese.

5. Arroz con Leche

Arroz con leche (or Rice Pudding!) is one of the most traditional desserts in Costa Rica. This comfort food is guaranteed to satisfy your sweet tooth and is another great way to use leftover white rice.

In just 20 minutes, you can whip up this thick creamy dessert. Make sure to add some cinnamon and raisins for extra sweetness!
