Our first Girl Scout groups of the summer arrived this past weekend! The energy and excitement that they bring to Outward Bound is contagious. They have wrapped up their Scuba adventure in Bocas del Toro and are off to San San Pond Sak. Read on to find out more of what our students have been up to.
Girl Scout Destination
Our first Girl Scouts of high season have arrived and we couldn’t be more happy to see all their smiling faces! They quickly departed for Panama with their breakfast burritos in hand and enjoyed the bumpy boat ride to their final destination: Bocas del Toro! Since being there, the Girl Scouts have been practicing their confined water skills in preparation for their dives coming up later in the week. They have been working with Dive Master Jim Rowe (our executive director) to complete their open water dive and night dive, where they will be able to experience bioluminescence, one of Panama’s natural wonders! At this point, they have taken their exams and completed their NAUI Scuba certifications (we are so proud).
Everyone has been having a blast wakeboarding and kneeboarding around the islands. They have been practicing on land and watching wakeboarding videos with the local kids to hone in on their skills. Today, the group will be heading off to Sloth Island (which sounds just as amazing as the name implies) to spot some two-toed sloths! Later in the day, they will be visiting bat cavern for some cave exploration.
Next week, everyone will be headed to San San Pond Sak, one of the most important sea turtle sanctuaries in the world to meet conservationists and learn about the active conservation efforts for endangered leatherback and hawksbill sea turtle populations. Students will also complete a night patrol to monitor the potential mama sea turtles laying their eggs along the beach and protect them from animal predators. They will also get to see and feed manatees banana leaves from the docks while in San San Pond Sak!
We are so excited to have the Girl Scout energy and spunk back on base soon. For more photos, visit our Facebook album (click here)!
