Week of June 15: Girl Scout Destinations Course Update

And so the adventure begins! We had our first arrivals of the summer this past weekend, and the Girl Scouts have been having a blast kicking off high season in Costa Rica and Panama.

Scuba and Sea Turtle Adventure (Session #1)

On Sunday, the group headed out bright and early to the indigenous community of San San Pond Sak in Panama. After settling in, local biologists introduced the girls to sea turtle conservation projects in the area. They spent time on the beach learning about the necessary steps to take when coming into contact with sea turtles and how to build nests at the hatchery. The girls got to know their surroundings on a deeper level by participating in a beach clean-up and planting coconut trees. They even got a chance to try coconut water straight from a coconut for the first time, as you can see below! It was a jam-packed day and they learned a ton.

Ready to put their knowledge into action, the group spent the next two days assisting with projects to protect the endangered Leatherback and Hawksbill Sea Turtle population, including nightly patrols, cataloging nests, and collecting eggs. Now the girls are off to Isla Solarte to scuba dive, zipline, help with service projects, and more!

Service Challenge (Session #1)

Our Service Challenge crew started their first full day on base enjoying a traditional Costa Rican breakfast and trying new, exotic fruits! Fueled up, they hiked into the dense rainforest reserve behind base and helped organize plants in the greenhouse. In the afternoon, they tried their hand at making freshly-squeezed orange juice and then rested up for the journey to Talamanca.

After the scenic drive, the group stretched their legs by playing soccer with students at the school. They also got acquainted with their homestay family and got to cook their first meal in their new home on a wooden stove called a “fogón”. The next day they began their first service project – painting a local school (while singing Disney tunes, of course)! The girls are so happy and enjoying every moment of their new experiences.
