Girl Scout Troop #690 Travels From Alaska to the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica

On June 3, 2018 Outward Bound Costa Rica (OBCR) welcomed nine Girl Scouts and six chaperones from Girl Scout Troop #690 of Eagle River, Alaska for an 11-day Custom Course adventure.

“From the tops of the trees to the rapids of the river, Outward Bound Costa Rica left me with an experience like never before!” – Caroline, GS from Troop #690

After they arrived at our rainforest base, they met their OBCR Instructors Diego, Bailey, and Lillian and began a course orientation. The fifteen of them woke up early to rappel down a waterfall and conquer their fear of heights.  The following morning the group had perfect conditions in Manuel Antonio for their first surf lesson and enjoyed snow cones on the beach. By the end of their first 2 days surfing, they were all able to stand up on their board!

After exploring Manuel Antonio National Park, the troop transferred to Playa Ostional where they began volunteering with a sea turtle conservation project–helping to clean the beach to ensure the sea turtles could lay their eggs and protecting the nesting sea turtles on night patrols. The troop was SO LUCKY to have arrived in Ostional right when the sea turtle arribada began; They were able to witness the whole process from sea turtles arriving from the ocean, making their way to the beach, digging their nests and laying their eggs.

“A whirlwind adventure with little surprises around each corner.” – Tania, Parent & Chaperone

Some of the added highlights from their course included: hiking Volcano Irazú, eating lunch at Sanatorio Durán, ziplining, whitewater rafting and touring a coffee farm.

Throughout their trip, there were many opportunities where each Girl Scout and chaperone pushed themselves and gained knowledge of Costa Rica. A special thank you all Troop #690 chaperons and to Melissa J., Troop Leader & Parent, for helping to coordinate this trip and for your dedication to providing impactful experiences for your Girl Scouts.
